Llandaff bound - we say farewell to Stephen Moore

Saturday 2 July 2016

We are delighted to announce that Stephen Moore, our Director of Music since 2010, has been appointed Organist and Master of the Choristers at Llandaff Cathedral. Stephen’s final Sunday with the Choir is 17 July. He takes up his new responsibilities in September.

We are delighted for Stephen. His richly deserved preferment was achieved in the face of stiff competition, and he follows in the footsteps of Robert Joyce's appointment to Llandaff in 1958. Stephen is now the first director of music at St Matthew’s to go directly to a corresponding cathedral appointment since David Ponsford in 1979.

Incidentally, so far as we are aware, this will be the first time that two siblings (Tom Moore is Director of Music at Wakefield Cathedral) have served concurrently as cathedral directors of music in the UK.

Stephen has worked tirelessly for our Parish, greatly expanding his role, and has acquitted himself with considerable distinction. He has taken the musical life of the parish to new heights, broadened its appeal, delivered the quality of repertoire and performance for which St Matthew’s was formally renowned, and enhanced the reputation of our parish far beyond its bounds.

Thanks to his efforts, our well-respected musical life has become a point of numeric growth, as well as spiritual enrichment. We are indebted to Stephen for all he has achieved, and anticipate a bright future for him, and us.

We pray that God will continue to bless him in his future life and vocation.
