Charity Breakfast

Saturday 7 September 2013

Around 35 people came to the Breakfast organized by the Community and Mission Group in aid of our supported charities. Kagando Mission Hospital Foundation is the overseas charity we are supporting at St Matthew's this year, and after the sumptuous 'Full English' a brief overview of the hospital's work was given by Sarah Oughton (Churchwarden Ann Walker's daughter). Sarah visited the Hospital, in a remote rural area of Uganda, in July 2007, using her full six weeks of leave allocation, to help set up the palliative care service there and train nurses. Sarah's cousin is a doctor and has made many ongoing trips to the Hospital.

Before the palliative care service was started, patients were dying at home of cancer and HIV/AIDS with no treatment or pain relief available to them. The remoteness of the mountain region meant that many of the desperately poor people found it impossible to travel once they became ill, but now they can be visited by doctors and nurses in Land Rovers.

The hospital itself was established in 1965, primarily for lepers through the work of the African Inland Mission, and over the years the hospital's activities have diversified in response to community needs. More information about its work is available here.
