A decade after its last performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, the Northampton Bach Choir is delighted to return to this remarkable work.
On the final page of his Petite Messe Solennelle, Rossini famously inscribed a humble note to God:
Dear Lord, here it is finished, this poor little Mass. Have I written sacred music, or merely music that is blessed? I was born for opera buffa, as you well know. A little knowledge, a little heart, that’s all. Be blessed, and grant me Paradise.
True to Rossini’s playful spirit, this Mass is “petite” only in name. Lasting around 80 minutes, it is neither strictly “petite” nor entirely “solemn” - its pages overflow with charm, wit, and expressive warmth. The modest forces called for piano and harmonium - create an intimate setting, yet the music itself is grand in ambition and rich in invention. As ever, Rossini’s melodic gift shines through, posing the age-old question: “Why should the devil have all the best tunes?”
First performed in a private Parisian salon in 1865 with just twelve singers, the Petite Messe Solennelle remains a unique jewel in the choral repertoire, blending sacred tradition with operatic flair. The Northampton Bach Choir is thrilled to revisit this masterpiece, inviting audiences to experience its blend of seriousness and joy, profundity and playfulness.
Join us for this special anniversary performance - a rare opportunity to hear Rossini’s final major work in all its vibrant colour and expressive depth.
• Booking opens to Friends of the choir from 6.30pm on Saturday 28th March.
